Overview
Each Individual Work Page documents a single publication — a book, article, periodical, or other published work — mentioned or referenced within the Fear Project. Every page is built from five core components, described below.
1. Bibliographic Info
| Title | The full title of the work as published. |
|---|---|
| Publisher | The publishing house, periodical, or issuing body. |
| City, State | Place of publication. |
| Date(s) | Original publication date, and dates of subsequent printings if relevant. |
| Editions | Distinct editions of the work, where applicable (first edition, revised edition, etc.). |
2. Description
A concise 1–2 sentence summary giving readers enough context to understand what the work is and why it appears in the project.
3. Digital Access
Links to authoritative digital editions of the work — scholarly archives, library digital collections, or other reliable full-text sources.
4. Category
Every work is tagged with one or more of the following controlled terms:
- Twain
- Primary Source
- Secondary Source
5. Alphabetical Index
Two companion indexes support navigation across all work pages:
- Complete List
- All works mentioned, listed alphabetically from A to Z, linking out to their individual page.
The publications list is divided into three types.
| Type | Coverage | Volume | Detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twain's own works | The canon of his books together with the early-journalism catalog from the publications source list. | 1,066 titles; 3,180 dated mentions across 189 works. | Each mention is tagged by context: in progress, published, republished, reviewed, dramatized, or discussed. |
| Primary sources | The period documents Fear's works from — letters, periodicals (the New York Times, the Hannibal Journal, and others), manuscript and archive holdings, notebooks, and catalog records. | About 2,540 primary sources | Inventoried by kind. |
| Secondary sources | The modern and scholarly works cited in brackets throughout the chronicle (Gribben, Tenney, MTB, MTL, and the like). | About 480 citation codes | Inventoried with their frequency, left unexpanded because a complete works-cited list already exists. |
- Cross-Referenced Index
- The same list of works, cross-referenced by category and by the people, places, and corporate bodies associated with them.
Special Note — Dual-Role Publishers: Some publishers are themselves organizations with their own institutional history and should be documented in both places. A periodical such as the weekly newspaper Die Zeit, or a magazine like The Atlantic, can appear as a Work (the publication itself, cataloged under Bibliographic Info) and as a Corporate Body (the publishing organization, cataloged under Individual Corporate Bodies Pages, typically under the Publishing/Media type). When this occurs, the two pages should be cross-linked bidirectionally so that a reader can move from the publication to the publisher and back.
